Agua de Jamaica – Hibiscus Flower Tea Cocktail

Refreshing Jamaican Cocktail

This is a gorgeous and refreshing cocktail made from dried Jamaican sorrel flowers.  Sorrel is also known as hibiscus flower.  When steeped, it imparts an amazing ruby color and a fresh citrusy flavor.  It is the main ingredient in what is more commonly known as Red Zinger tea.

You can make this as a cool beverage for the whole family or you can add a splash of rum for a truly delicious cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 2 quarts boiling water
  • 1/2 cup of dried sorrel/hibiscus flower
  • 1/2 cup sugar (can be made with the equivalent Splenda)
  • 2 quarts ginger ale (regular or sugar free)
  • White rum (optional)
  • Fresh mint for garnish

Bring 2 quarts water to a boil and remove from heat.  Add dried sorrel and sugar and let steep for about 10 minutes.  Strain out the flowers and discard.  Allow tea to cool in the refrigerator.

When completely cooled, add equal parts tea and ginger ale to a glass filled with ice.  Stir to combine, garnish with mint and serve.  Add a shot of white rum and stir to incorporate if desired!
